Byron Nash

BYRON NASH & PLANB BIO.

Pittsburgh has a reputation of breeding talented musicians and artists ranging from Christina Aguilera to Girl Talk, Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller. These artists, just to name a few, represent the wide-range of talent that has emerged from the streets of the steel town. With a deep-rooted history in Pittsburgh’s music scene, guitarist Byron Nash has been around for quite some time, building a reputation for his unique style of rock n’ soul guitar playing. Evident in that sound are the various genres of music that have influenced his life, including: early thrash metal, jam, funk and soul, to Hip-Hop, jazz, blues and world music. He spent years as guitarist in his first group, the power trio SPORADIC who played the festival circuit pretty heavy for years. With SPORADIC he cut his teeth as an improvisational player opening for National acts like the Allman Brothers, Derek Trucks, MOE, The Dave Matthews band and more. That experience got him well-known as a talented player on the scene which lead him to join the popular Pittsburgh-based rap/rock outfit Formula412. Nash has played with everyone ranging from 50Cent, Pharrell Williams and N.E.R.D., Fantasia, Busta Rhymes, George Clinton and P-Funk and many more.

The SPORADIC and Formula412 years made him a well-seasoned, and popular player, but Nash had other ideas and styles he wanted to try and express leading him to starting his new band BYRON NASH & PLANB. The new group is the melting pot of all of Nash’s former experiences and musical styles. Teaming up with some of Pittsburgh’s finest musicians, PLANB is a juggernaut of musical talent and prowess. The band are Nash (vocals/guitar), Evan Thorsen (guitar), Philip Price (bass), Randraiz Wharton (keys), and George Barron (drums/percussion). The group origins started with Nash and Thorsen who got together to start jamming for fun on the side. There was no intentions of starting a band, but the sessions which were simply fun and musical grew into intense weekly meetings where the two would study production, write songs, experiment with sounds and push each other musically. The duo spent almost five years locked in Nash’s studio cultivating a new sound and a plethora of songs. In time they decided to grab a few musicians to learn the demos and do a live performance.

The first few shows were such a success that the two, almost by popular demand of the audiences decided to make the band official calling it PLANB. Their “official” debut show was a sellout due to a fast-building buzz and hard-nosed promotion. In a short amount of time, the group created a reputation for packing venues and for their electrifying concerts showcasing their cool style of rock-meets-funk and soul music. In 2016 they were asked to open for the legendary Living Colour, and since then have been packing shows all over the Tri-State area.

The combination of Nash and Thorsen’s styles on guitar is a varied blend, inspired by the technical prowess of metal guitar heroes like Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai and Dimebag Darrel fused with the expressive soul style of Jimi Hazel, Vernon Reid, and Hendrix. Nash’s lyrics are personal, revealing, and emotive, complimented by the tone of his warm, subtle voice; the combination of which helps to draw the listener deeper into his story. The undeniably solid rhythm section of Barron’s thunderous grooves complimented by Price’s fat, funky bass style topped of by Wharton’s jazz stylings makes PLANB sound dramatically different from any acts out there right now.

Towards the end of 2016, BYRON NASH & PLANB completed their debut EP “The Late Bloomer” which is a collection of songs the band had been working on. Their music has been featured weekly on 91.3 WYEP FM, The Soul Show.
